Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet (3 m) high hoop (the goal) under organized rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.
Teams try to advance the ball and shoot it through one basket (the ball must enter from above) and to keep the opposition from scoring through the other. Each field goal, or basket, scores two points, or three points if shot from beyond a specified distance (21 ft/6 m in U.S. colleges, slightly longer in international and professional play). Teams must shoot the ball within a prescribed time limit (24 sec in the National Basketball Association; 30 sec in international games and in most women’s play; 45 sec in men’s collegiate play). At the heart of the game is the playing space and the equipment. The space is a rectangular, indoor court. The principal pieces of equipment are the two elevated baskets, one at each end (in the long direction) of the court, and the basketball itself. The ball is spherical in shape and is inflated.
Any player committing five personal fouls must leave the game. Bonus rule in effect on the fifth foul of each half. On the fifth team foul, a one and one free throw shot will be shot by the player fouled. Make the first shot, receive a second. NO shooting free throws on player control fouls (offensive fouls) even after the fifth team foul. Team fouled on a player control foul receives possession of the ball at point of foul.
